Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a member
of the borage family and has large, hairy leaves. It’s a perennial with a deep
taproot that’s
black. Although black externally, the roots are white and fleshy on the
interior. The plant contains a glutinous juice. Comfrey naturally contains
allantoin, a compound that helps new skin cells grow, and other substances that
help reduce inflammation and keep skin healthy. The root is often incorporated
into body care formulas and other topical care recipes. Much debate surrounds
the safety of comfrey due to various parts and preparations containing
potentially toxic alkaloids. It is important to understand that the part used,
species, and time of harvest all come in to play when determining the safety of
this herb. Talk to your practitioner.
How to use: For compresses, poultices and washes: 2 tbsp. boil with 200 ml for
10 min and then stand for another 20 min.
