Herbs have been used for thousands of years as medicine, as
preservatives, to add flavor to meals, as fragrances and even for spiritual purposes;
these can be used fresh or dried. In
culinary use, herbs are typically distinguished from spices. Herbs are the leaf
part of a plant while spices are usually dried and produced from other parts of
the plant, including fruits, roots, bark and seeds. In medicinal or spiritual
use, any parts of the plant might be considered as herbs, including fruits,
seeds, leaves, roots, flowers, root bark, inner bark, and resin (gum).
